UPDATE: Desalination plant personnel did not cause Meerensee water cuts

It appears information issued by the City of uMhlathuze regarding Meerensee's water cuts was erroneous

FOLLOWING this morning’s report of water cuts in Meerensee as a result of desalination plant personnel inadvertently closing a valve to a reservoir, it has since emerged that a burst water pipe was the cause and not any action by the desalination plant.

‘Our workers have not been close to any municipal pipes or valves,’ said the plant’s Project Manager Marius Smit of North Coast Water Utility.

This morning, City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane said in an official statement that contractors working on the desalination plant had closed the valve to the Meerensee reservoir.

‘While reports from uMhlathuze Water technicians initially indicated that the desalination plant contractors had closed the valve, this information appears to have been given in error,’ said Ncalane later on Monday afternoon.

‘As for restoration of the water, the City is closely monitoring the repair work being done by uMhlathuze Water to ensure the system is resuscitated by the end of the day’.

Water tankers were dispatched to affected areas Monday morning.
