Fast times clocked at Tronox Marathon

Mr Price Maxed runner Sphecihle Nene was the first man to cross the finish line

MR Price Maxed runner Sphecihle Nene was the first man to cross the finish line in the 42.2km race at the annual Tronox Marathon hosted by the uMhlathuze Athletics Club on Sunday at Addison Park.

Nene raced home in a blitzing time of 2.42.50 to claim the 2017 title after completing the challenging route that took runners through the hilly parts of Empangeni and through surrounding farm lands.

‘It was a tough route, but I ran it last year and knew what to expect. I managed to better my time by three minutes which I’m happy about,’ said Nene.

Local club NRB Harriers dominated the other distances, with Thulani Mdletshe (1.10.25), Penelope Biyela (2.42.38) and Patrick Nkosi (31.42) winning the men’s 21.1km run, ladies 21.1km walk and men’s 10km run respectively.

Richards Bay Athletics Club’s Melanie van Rooyen was the first lady home in the 21.1km run after crossing the line in 1.30.11.

Benzile Nhlenyana was the first lady home in the 10km run in 42.57.
