AVBOB is dedicated to developing literacy and numeracy skills in schools.
On Thursday the AVBOB Foundation donated its 39th container library to a primary school in Pongola.
Siyaziqeqesha Primary School is the proud beneficiary of this impressive facility worth R500 000, fully stocked with 2 500 books.
The R13-million container library project was launched in 2013 to assist schools in disadvantaged communities throughout South Africa.
Siyaziqeqesha School Principal Ronald Phakathi expressed his excitement about the donation.
‘The school will utilise the library in such a way no one will come to school and vandalise it. We thank AVBOB for what they have done for our school,’ he said.
AVBOB General Manager: Corporate Affairs and Marketing, Adriaan Bester, said the container library is a fitting donation as it will assist in creating a deep and continued culture of reading among learners and the community as a whole.
‘The improvement of pupil performance in literacy and numeracy is one of the crucial challenges facing the government. As AVBOB we are trying to alleviate the issue one school at a time.’
Motivating the learners, Bester said: ‘If you believe in yourself, take opportunities offered to you and work hard, you can achieve anything in life.’
The containers are refurbished and then fitted with wooden laminated floors, shelving, a chalkboard, tables and chairs.
The libraries are also fitted with solar PV systems, which give the libraries the capability to power up LED lights, computers, projectors and even recharge cell phones and laptops.
