Empowered and ready for business

There's a new world waiting for certified Zikulise trainees.

Having received their completion certificates, the budding entrepreneurs have the world at their fingertips

It was a wonderful occasion for 50 ecstatic trainees at the Zikulise Community Upliftment Project NPC certificate handover function held on Wednesday.

Old and young, men and women all rejoiced at what they had achieved as they received certificates in baking; basic business skills; computer skills; hair braiding; sewing and traditional beading after completing courses which were run since July this year.

Guest speaker Charmayne Pountney, Executive Chamber Manager of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI) encouraged the participants to start their own businesses.

She said, ‘There are five key areas in understanding how business work.

‘The first is costing and pricing, quality and delivery. The second is to set goals and to find a good mentor. Thirdly, be innovative. Decide what will give you the edge.

‘The fourth is communication and the fifth is to be strong as nothing is impossible. Live your dream.’

Past trainee, Thalente Mhlongo who completed the baking course encouraged the participants to make the most of the opportunity which was given to them at Zikulise.

‘It is up to you to take what you have learnt and make something of yourselves.’

She told them about the success she has had since the training.

‘I have started my own small baking business, called Nica’s Bakery and now am able to obtain an income,’ she said.

‘Without the assistance from Zikulise I wouldn’t be where I am today.’

Delicious cupcakes and muffins were made by three past trainees, Rejoice Majola, Thalente Mhlongo and Monica who catered especially for the event.

Zikulise’s Executive Director, Julie Jonson thanked the funders, the National Lottery Development Trust Fund Charities Sector for joining hands with Zikulise as without their generosity the training would not be possible.

‘She commented, ‘With the help of the funding received the trainees, who are currently unemployed individuals now have a much better chance of gaining employment or starting up their own small enterprises.’
