Richards Bay Minerals MD steps down
No reason given for Mpho Mothoa's surprising resignation
RESPECTED Managing Director of Richards Bay Minerals, Mpho Mothoa, will relinquish his top role at the minerals mine at the end of this month.
The unexpected news was circulated to staff via an email sent on Friday from Rio Tinto Iron &
Titanium MD Stephane Leblanc, in which he stated Mothoa had made the decision for personal and family reasons.
‘We thank Mpho for his contribution to RBM and, more broadly, as a member of the Energy & Minerals wider leadership team, I wish him and his family well for the future.
‘An announcement about Mpho’s successor will be made in due course.
‘I know that news like this can be distracting.
‘I ask that you remain focused on your safety, and that of your colleagues, and continue with the great work that makes RBM a business we are all proud to be a part of.’
Mothoa was appointed in June 2013 and has been accountable for all operational and administrative aspects of the business since.
Before he was welcomed to Richards Bay, he was Chief Operating Officer of the Rössing Uranium mine in Namibia.
A chemical engineer by profession, Mpho has been with Rio Tinto for 16 years and has held various operational and senior leadership roles, primarily at Palabora Mining Company.
