Criminals’ target Unizulu students
Students advised to take extra caution to prevent robbery and house break-ins
HOUSE break-ins and robberies at students’ off-campus residences are becoming a serious concern in KwaDlangezwa.
According to Mtunzini police, they are being flooded with theft, break-in and robbery cases targeting University of Zululand students living off campus.
Reports suggest criminals normally target house appliances such as television sets, computers, microwaves and cell phones.
‘We plead with students and the community to be vigilant, lock their doors and not to leave their valuables where criminals can see them,’ said police spokesperson Capt Sibusiso Guma.
He said when students walk to their off-campus rooms after classes, they become the targets of criminals.
He advised students to walk in groups and not to carry their valuables around, but rather keep them in safe places.
‘This is getting worse and it’s time to focus in curbing this crime wave by introducing crime prevention measures day and night.’
Mtunzini police will hold a special meeting with students and landlords at Vulindlela Hall in KwaDlangezwa today (Thursday) to discuss the problem.
The university’s Protection Service Department (PSD) will also attend.

Essential tips to help prevent or limit housebreaking and theft
• Don’t leave outside lights on the whole day.
• Avoid leaving the gate or garage doors to property opened.
• Don’t leave your tools or valuables within easy reach of a prospective burglar.
• Know all your emergency numbers.
• Never leave keys in the locks or at the door.
• Curtains should be closed after dark.
• Inform the police of suspicious characters who you consider to pose a threat.
