Suspected drunk bus driver crash on N2 near kwaMbonambi

31 passengers required treatment after a bus overturned and landed on its side

WHILE there were no serious injuries, 31 passengers required treatment after a bus overturned and landed on its side, on the N2 near kwaMbonambi on Thursday evening.

While the exact details of the cause of the crash and preceding events are not know and are being investigated by the SAPS, it is reported that the driver of the bus was under the influence of alcohol.

In all, 15 people sustained moderate injuries (yellow code) while 16 escaped with minor injuries (green code).

All were treated at the scene before being transported to Nseleni Clinic for further treatment.

The incident came off the back of a reprimand from Mpumalanga MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Pat Ngomane, who delivered a speech regarding the high number of road accidents in that province.

Ngomane said road fatalities in the country pose more of a risk than HIV/AIDS.

‘The reality is that more people are killed in South African roads than those that are killed by the HIV/Aids.

‘If we do not do something dramatic and urgent we are going to lose the skill base of our country.

‘People who die on our roads are young, skilled and breadwinners.

‘These are people who are critically needed for the development of our country,’ he said.
