TENNIS ‘rained’ supreme and outlasted intermittent rain and howling winds which tried their utmost to disrupt the 25th Van Zyl Cup tennis tournament at the Richards Bay Country Club last Sunday.
The enthusiasm and positive attitudes of the 20 participating players brightened up the day.
Phillip Fouché, Melani Muller, Annette Boshoff and Franco Els won the day after completing the most games in the allocated time.
This prestigious tournament is hosted by the Van Zyl family, with Louis and Mari Van Zyl coming out to show their support.
Despite the miserable conditions, superb tennis was played during the morning.
The ‘bell’ format of the tournament, where the bell indicates the start and end of each match, has become very popular over the years.
The Van Zyl couple both served as past presidents of the Zululand Tennis Association during the mid 1980s when Zululand tennis was still thriving with 13 participating clubs.
They have continued their involvement over the years by sponsoring the Van Zyl Cup.
The purpose of this tournament is not to identify champions, but to bring tennis enthusiasts together and build lasting relationships.
