Joining hands to fight business crime

Companies join forces with police to fight business-related crimes in Richards Bay

Richards Bay businesses are uniting with the Zululand Business Against Crime (BAC) organisation and Richards Bay SAP to combat illegal activities crippling companies in the area.

In response to recently released crime statistics which indicates an upward trend in business robberies, the groups decided to join hands to confront the issue.

BAC Zululand Manager Dave Whittaker said the first meeting, held on 22 October, met with great success.

‘This forum will be an effective tool against crime as it allows businesses to interact with the SAPS and jointly tackle challenges in Richards Bay.

‘I think it is a great concept and we fully support it and hope it grows from strength to strength.’

On Wednesday another consolidated crime fighting forum was formed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Business Against Crime (BAC), the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) and retailers to curb crimes such as cash-in-transit heists and retail robberies in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to a statement released by the provincial SAPS, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni believes there is still an opportunity for the police, business and the private security industry to ‘arrest the situation and fight business-related crime in a co-ordinate and disciplined fashion’.

‘I will be the first to acknowledge that police alone cannot solve the crime situation in this province and we need to partner with those that are affected to find workable solutions.

‘We are convinced that this strong partnership will be felt by criminals in this province,’ said Ngobeni.
