ESHOWE’S Olympic sprinter Justine Palframan raced to first place in the 400m at the first event of the Athletics SA Speed Series held in Durban on Wednesday evening.
The Speed Series sees athletes competing in a limited number of events in Durban, Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom and Germiston.
She won in a time of 54.13sec, 0.12 seconds ahead of Gena Lofstrand and 4.64 seconds ahead of third-placed Happiness Mkhize of UKZN.
In other races, national record holders Anaso Jobodwana chased down early leader Emile Erasmus, who got off to a great start, taking the men’s 100m race in 10.21sec with a +3.9m/s tailwind pushing him to the line.
In the men’s 10 000m contest, Elroy Gelant started well with the assistance of two pace setters.
He faded in the second half in tough conditions, but managed to secure a win in 28:16.54, with Namakoe Nkhasi of Lesotho finishing second in 28:32.55.
Earlier in the evening, national cross country champion Kesa Molotsane reeled in marathon runner Irvette van Zyl, who had stormed into a commanding lead, and burst clear to win the women’s 5 000m race in 16:08.21.
