Water, roads and crime on the business agenda

ZCCI held its Richards Bay divisional meeting on Thursday

THE Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI) on Thursday held its Richards Bay divisional meeting at which various items pertinent to residents and local businesses were discussed.

Despite recent heavy rains, the water crisis persists and all residents and businesses were urged to continue to use water sparingly.

It was reported that Lake Mzingazi’s water level has increased to two metres, which puts it almost at extraction level.

The City of uMhlathuze is in the process of refurbishing abstraction equipment so the lake can be used as an alternative water source for the city.

The desalination plant is also due to be commissioned soon.

Concerns over blocked storm water drains causing flooding and standing water in Arboretum were raised.

A recent SA Roads Federation meeting was held, at which ongoing projects were discussed.

Work on the N2 is progressing well and construction at the John Ross/N2 bridge has not caused as much disruption as previously feared.

Doubling of the North Central Arterial will begin soon, as will bridge construction on the D700 in Heatonville.

The Alton truck stop which has been in discussions for some time has not made much progress.

The Zululand Observer is investigating an alleged scam in the area, in which local businesses are targeted by people masquerading as Department of Agriculture representatives.

These people obtain the names and personal information of business owners and send an email requesting a quote for that business to supply, as in one case, water pumps.

The business owner is rushed into making a decision but, when one such business owner delved deeper, she realised the email she received did not contain official Department of Agriculture information.

Business owners are urged to be cautious and vigilant to avoid being caught in potential scams.
