Small person Nokubonga gets her driver’s licence

Despite her height challenges, Oros acquired her drivers' license

‘NOTHING is impossible. A dream can be achieved no matter the situation.’

So says small person Nokubonga ‘Oros’ Xulu (26) from the uMzingazi area in Richards Bay, who despite her height challenges broke all records when she passed her driver’s licence test with flying colours last week.

While others complain, ambitious Nokubonga had no time to moan about things she can’t change, but rather used her energy to achieve what many believed was impossible.

This down-to-earth Department of Sports and Recreations officer turned what many call a disability into something positive – setting a good example that nothing is impossible.

Not only was this a step closer to achieving her dream of owning a car, but her success broke all myths against little people.

‘It’s my dream to own a car and I knew I had to pass this test first before I could even think of buying one.

‘I searched for a diving school which could offer services to me, and when I found it there was no looking back,’ said Nokubonga.

Because of her height, the driving school offered her a vehicle with hand controls, which she used during her lessons and driver’s test.

‘It was not easy at first, but I am sure everyone feels like that during their first lessons. My instructor and colleagues motivated me and things became easy.’

She kept the news of attending a driving school a secret to her family, but when she came home as a qualified driver, family and friends embraced her achievement.

‘When you put your mind to something, you can achieve anything. My body structure does not determine what I can achieve. I am not incapable of reaching my goals, in fact it is always that one thing that motivate me.’

‘I’m now looking forward to owning a car and be independent.’
