Tugela transfer delayed
The contract between the Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) and consultants Aecom has not been finalised

THE contract between the Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS) and consultants Aecom, who were awarded the tender for the doubling of the Tugela to Goedertrouw water transfer rate, has not yet been finalised.
The parties are debating contractual obligations which will influence the final contract, and it may take several weeks to achieve consensus.
However, DWS said they would issue a Letter of Intent, which will effectively authorise Aecom to proceed with procurement of long lead items.
This was reported at a meeting of the Tugela Transfer Group on Tuesday, where the need for clear lines of communication and progress reports were urged.
Confirmation was given that the budget for the turnkey project, initially set at R407-million, was secure and the construction period remains at 18 months.
The Tugela Transfer Scheme will double the transfer rate from the present 1.1m3 per second to 2.4m3 per second.
