UPDATE: Dark times in the Bay

Richards Bay residents fell victim to a massive power outage on Friday

UMHLATUZE Municipality on Saturday confirmed that a power outage which saw a large portion of the city without electricity on Friday, was caused by a blown mini-substation.

The failure occurred at about 2pm when the mini-sub in the Hercules substation near Netcare The Bay Hospital blew, rendering the hospital, as well as Birdswood, Veldenvlei and Wildenweide without power.

A hospital spokesperson said the problem was reported to the municipality and workers were on the scene within 15 minutes.

Two-and-a-half hours later the crisis was over and power restored to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the hospital ran on its back-up generators so business was not affected.

Power was restored to all affected areas by 7pm.

It was the turn of Meerensee residents on Saturday evening, when their electricity was shut off so emergency repair work could be carried out.

This follows intermittent power outages for parts of Meerensee. Power was restored a little after 8pm.
