Community must fight school vandalism – MEC

KZN Finance MEC Belinda Scott has appealed to the people of Jozini to work with the police

KZN Finance MEC Belinda Scott has appealed to the people of Jozini to work with the police and report those who vandalise and steal school property in the area.

Scott made the plea after she heard that two local schools, Hlazazane High and Gujini Primary, had fallen prey to serial break-ins, theft and vandalism.

The MEC was in the area on Wednesday as part of the KZN government’s Operation Sukuma Sakhe programme.

She visited the two schools before meeting with the community members at Gujini Hall, reminding the community about the importance of forming good relationships with the local police, as well as protecting their schools and any other government property.

She said the community know who these criminals are.

‘It is our duty to put a stop on these acts. Every time a member of a community or someone from outside the community comes into your community and destroys property or steals furniture from a school, it is the local learners who suffer.

‘You have to fight against this scourge and form good relationships with the police by providing them with information to arrest the vandals.’

Residents also raised many service delivery and development-related issues, including water shortages, the need for government housing aid, electricity and access roads.

Scott promised that their concerns would be reported to the KZN cabinet for intervention.
