Bay goes Bollywood

'Yeh Rishta' is a South African Bollywood production with scenes shot in Richards Bay

THE much anticipated release of a home-grown Bollywood movie filmed in Richards Bay hit the shelves on Tuesday morning.

The official launch was held at Satrins Supermarket in Brackenham where the cast members signed copies of the DVD and greeted fans.

‘Yeh Rishta’ is a truly South African Bollywood production with all scenes shot in the Bay.

It has its own original sound track, background music and local non-professional actors.

It took a whopping 16 months to complete and has a pure Richards Bay flavour. Local beaches provided some stunning scenes in the movie.

Asked to sum up the blockbuster, Director Preshanthan Moodley said, ‘Yeh Rishta essentially is a film about family and relationships. It deals with many different types of relationships – between a mother and daughter, friends and lovers.

‘And in true Bollywood fashion, these relationships become complicated and deliciously messy,’ he said. The DVD is available at Satrins Supermarket at a cost of R50.

Synopsis

Business tycoon Roshni Raj (Sunitha Baboolal) has everything she could ever want – a loving family, a thriving empire and a beautiful daughter, Tarika (Trinisha Singh).

Roshni is a single mother who is very controlling, raising her daughter with good morals and values and always thinking her daughter will marry her best friend Shyam (Sachin Baboolal), who also comes from a powerful family.

To Roshni’s dismay, Tarika falls in love with a chef, Sohan (Bradley Singh). Furious, Roshni tries everything in her power to force the two apart, but only ends up pushing them closer together.

When all that Roshni has done comes to light, Tarika becomes enraged and questions her mother about it. Things get messy, and eventually the mother and daughter part ways. Tarika eventually marries Sohan and they start a family, without being in contact with her mother.

Many years pass and Tarika’s best friend Shreya (Tanita Maharaj) can’t bear to see Tarika plagued by these unresolved issues, so she devises a plan to reunite the fragmented family.

  1. One of the most amazing movies I have ever seen. I cried through most of the scenes. I highly recommend this movie.

Please watch the movie but remember the tissues because believe me no matter how “tough” you are, you will need it…

  2. I know Sunitha for more than 30 years and always knew that she had the qualities of a Bollywood star. As Roshnie Raj Yeh Rista she has proven just this. Sachin surprised me with his introvert personality. Well done to Sachin and Sunitha

    Lots of Love
