Port Control upgrade falls further behind schedule

Contractual issues delay progress

ORIGINALLY scheduled for completion in September 2015, renovations to the Port Control building at Alkantstrand are now planned to be finished late next year.

The project will include adding an additional level to the three-storey station.

Not much has happened on site for over a year, during which time the public has also been denied access to the spectacular panoramic view from the lookout point adjacent to the control tower.

‘TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) confirms that construction of the Port Control building is still on hold due to contractual issues related to the project which are still being dealt with,’

Preston Khomo, Port Manager at the Port of Richards Bay told the Zululand Observer this week.

‘The revised projected start date for construction is June 2017 and the projected completion date is October 2018.

‘The site has 24-hour security at Port Control and regular checks are undertaken.

‘Damage to windows and other structures during construction was further exacerbated during strong winds.

‘Public access to the lookout point will resume once the construction project has been officially handed over.

‘As TNPA, we share the public and industry’s desire to urgently complete this project,’ said Khomo.
