The heat is on!

Some tips on how to deal with extreme heat if your home or office is not fitted with air conditioning

BY 11am yesterday weather forecasters predicted an average temperature for Zululand of around 37 degrees today.

It was predicted that Empangeni would hit a high of 41 with 38% humidity, while eShowe and Richards Bay are set to sizzle at around 38 degrees by midday.

While forecasters differ, it is safe to say that it will be very hot and dangerous to be out in the sun for extended periods of time.

Here are some tips on how to deal with extreme heat if your home or office is not fitted with air conditioning:

Water wise

Use the cooling power of water – fill a bucket or basin and soak your feet, or wet towels or washcloths can cool you down when draped over the head and shoulders.

Eliminate extra sources of heat

Incandescent light bulbs can generate unnecessary heat, as can computers or appliances left running. Try and avoid using the stove or oven.

Stay hydrated

Even on a normal day the body needs a lot of water, so as the temperature rises, your water intake should also increase to compensate. Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine, as both of these substances can act as diuretics and promote dehydration.

Keep lunch and dinner simple

Don’t eat large, protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body.

Remember your pets

Your pets, especially dogs, also suffer considerably on hot days. Give your dogs (and if you are brave, your cats) and other pets a cooling shower or bath. This will bring their temperature down quickly. A cool, wet towel on the floor for them to lie on also works well.

The Zululand Observer advises that at the first signs of heatstroke, immediately try and cool the person or pet down and to be safe, visit your nearest health care facility for a check-up.
