Water utility backs Myeni in war of words
In a press statement posted on Saturday afternoon, ‘management’ lashed out

CASTIGATED on many fronts in the national media, Mhlathuze Water chairperson Dudu Myeni is being defended by the utility’s hierarchy.
In a press statement posted on Saturday afternoon, ‘management’ lashed out at, especially, City Press, alleging they were being fed untruths by suspended Mhlathuze CEO Sibusiso Makhanya.
The utility said they will launch an official complaint with the Press Ombudsman ‘about the paper’s grossly unethical conduct which has resulted in the paper allegedly being openly abused by an aggrieved executive of the entity and being used as a tool to smear the name of its board chairperson’.
The authority further alleged the newspaper has become an instrument that is being used to tarnish the image of the Mhlathuze Water Authority’.
It referred to a number of serious accusations against Myeni as ‘baseless because individuals behind them had an axe to grind, with the Chairperson for her strong stance against fraud and maladministration’.
It alleged the aim of the coverage was ‘to cause further damage to the reputational image of our Chairperson’, calling it a ‘smear campaign’ and saying Myeni had not been given adequate time to respond to allegations.
The media release defended claims of irregular CSI expenditure, saying it had to empower and uplift impoverished communities within its area of operation.
Myeni’s perceived shortcomings as South African Airways board chairwoman have also come for hard condemnation in public circles.
