Local bowlers on song
Zululand bowlers made their presence felt when both the men's and women's open and senior singles were played at Dundee last weekend
ONCE again Zululand bowlers made their presence felt when both the men’s and women’s open and senior singles were played at Dundee last weekend.
In the women’s open singles, Anita Scott of Richards Bay retained the title she won last year when, despite losing 14-21 to both B Baleri and her daughter F Baleri of Klipbank, went on to record wins of 21-10 against R Meyer (Empangeni Bowling Club), 21-5 against N Dreyer (Vryheid) and 21-14 against S Malan (Dundee) to finish with a score of 6+20, which was enough for her to emerge as champion for the second year running.
The men’s open title went the way of Braam van Zyl of Harrismith, with Barry Mutlow (Richards Bay) filling the runners-up spot.
In the men’s senior singles, Vlekkie Visser (Richards Bay) lost by the narrowest of margins (20-21) to B Malan of Klipbank, but then went on to beat club-mate B King 21-11, D Slabbert (Dundee) 21-15, W Schultz (Klipbank) 21-17 and T Smale (Newcastle) 21-8, which gave him a score of 8+32, which was enough for him to take the crown for 2017.
The women’s senior title went to M Coetzee of Klipbank.
Zululand can be well pleased with the efforts of their players, which is hopefully a sign of good things to come.
The Empangeni bowling club two bowl trips competition got off to a rousing start last Thursday when 28 teams took to the greens.
Played on a winner versus winner format, 14 teams remain unbeaten, and this week will see another seven fall by the wayside.
With five weeks still to go, it is still too early for any predictions.
The section prize, sponsored by Miskiet Engineering, was won by Ettienne Steenkamp with a plus score of 17.
A Zululand Bowls management meeting will be held at the Empangeni Country Club at 9am this Saturday.
