Taxi driver’s shooter handed 20 years in jail

As Khwela alighted, he drew the gun and fired before fleeing the scene

A LITTLE more than a year after the fatal shooting of taxi owner and driver Lucky Cebekhulu, his family has been given the justice they craved.

Siyabonga Victor Khwela (26), the man who put a .38 revolver to Cebekhulu’s head and pulled the trigger, was handed a hefty 20 years behind bars in the Empangeni Regional Court.

The shooting occurred on the R34 opposite Empangeni Milling on 10 November 2015.

Khwela and an accomplice were travelling from Johannesburg to Empangeni in Cebekhulu’s taxi.

They requested he stop to drop them off and as Khwela alighted, he drew the gun and fired before fleeing the scene.

Khwela’s companion, who cannot be named as he was never charged with any crime, was taken into custody at the scene and Empangeni police would later the same day arrest Khwela.

He was charged with murder and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and was given 15 and five respectively years for each after being found guilty on all counts.
