Fish on the run

Great sized catches reported along Zululand shoreline

LOCAL anglers have been reaping the rewards of good weather and fishing conditions of late, recording large numbers of catches all along the Zululand shoreline.

Sodwana Bay is producing some excellent fish on artificial drop shot baits on medium spinning tackle, which include Kingfish, Three Spot Pompano and Wave Garrick.

Richards Bay is providing heavy non-edible fish, with reports of Sand Sharks, Guitar Fish, Browns, Diamond Rays and Black Fin Sharks being successfully caught and released.

The bait proving successful in this area is the full metal jacket trace with a Mustad 10/0 Tuna Circle hook.

Anglers with ski boats have been landing a decent number of Couta all the way from Sodwana down to Durban.

Interestingly though, is that most of the catches have taken place up north on trawled lures, such as the Rattler 150 shallow diving lures, mainly in the pink or blue colours.

Tuna have been slow up north, but the few that have been reported are of good size.

The Snoek have frequented the shallow waters, taking Strike Pro Magic Minnows, Sardine fillet and Clark spoons.

Most anglers trawling Clark spoons fast have managed to hook into some of the bigger fish off the rips in deeper water.

Richards Bay has had good numbers of Yellow Fin Tuna being reported, with a few over 60kg, but out on the 400m mark.
