NSRI issues spring tide warning
NSRI issues warning of upcoming Spring Tide following festive drownings
THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued a strong warning to bathers for the upcoming full moon spring tide, which peaks on Thursday.
This comes after 37 drownings (23 adults and 14 children) were attended to and 193 persons rescued during the festive season.
Between the beginning of December and 2 January, the NSRI responded to 132 operations.
The NSRI attributed most sea drownings to strong coastal rip currents, some from suspected medical causes and others from accidents around water in lagoons, swimming pools, rivers, lakes and dams.
‘We encourage the public not to drink alcohol around water and we urge parents to make sure that children have responsible adult supervision around water and that swimming pools at homes have a cloak of safety around it,’ said the NSRI.
