Foundation CEO calls for employment intervention

uThungulu Community Foundation has called for suggestions to seriously start tackling the issue going into 2017.

AS the district continues to battle with extreme unemployment figures – more than 50% in some rural areas – the uThungulu Community Foundation has called for suggestions to seriously start tackling the issue going into 2017.

Foundation CEO Chris Mkhize says he believes there are numerous unrealised opportunities to address the perennial challenge of large unemployment numbers in Zululanders more effectively.

One of these is the failure of small and medium enterprises within the first three to five years of operation.
‘There is a need for a collective approach to design successful strategies.

‘Individuals and private and public sector organisations must now seek ways of collaborating more with one another to make positive contributions towards creating employment and business opportunities for small and medium enterprises,’ says Mkhize.

‘Such strategies must also address challenges we have in our education system, which is a major cause of most of our high levels of unemployment, crime and failure to run successful enterprises.

‘Diversity of opinions and collective thinking is what we currently need in the process of dealing with our complex socio-economic problems.

‘Let us all stand up and put our shoulders to the wheel. We owe this to future generations.’

During the next two months, the Foundation seeks to collect information from a wide array of individuals and organisations to cement a strong strategy for the district.

‘The Foundation takes its hat off to individuals and organisations that offer study bursaries to students, provide training to small and medium enterprises, and also lend support to community-based organisations,’ Mkhize concluded.
