A good time for reflection

An opportune time to say goodbye to the past, bury the regrets and start a new chapter.

THE cynics will call this ‘cliché time’, as wishes of health, wealth and happiness are sent out at the commencement of the Year of our Lord, 2017.

They are possibly right, but there is no doubt that the start of a new year brings with it thoughts of optimism and new beginnings.

It is, psychologically, an opportune time to say goodbye to the past, bury the regrets and start a new chapter.

In looking back, readers may reflect on successes and failures, wins and losses, joys and sorrows.

What is undeniable is that ‘what is done, is done’. As painful as the regrets may be, the past cannot be recreated or altered – and to dwell on the past may well deny future happiness.

On the positive side, remember with great appreciation the good things, people and memories that made the past year a good one.

If you are alive, in good health, with a roof over your head and family and friends to count on, you already start the new year in a privileged position.

If 2016 gave you lots of laughs and many reasons to celebrate, then count your blessings.

Be grateful that you have another year in which to set new goals and strive for success.

If you begin the year in poor health or disadvantaged circumstances, we wish you the courage to face adversity.

If you are in a situation of privilege, reach out to others and do all you can to spread happiness.

Share your knowledge and experience with others; increase your circle of influence.

Take control of the year, rather than be a victim of random circumstances.

Cultivate good daily habits that will enable you to fulfill your resolutions through planned actions and pre-determined attitudes.

Make this a year of discovery and a year of volunteering (for in giving, we receive).

Dream big, but remember: it is the accumulation of small victories that generally outweigh a single mighty achievement.

We wish you peace, prosperity and happiness in the year ahead.

May God bless our nation and all his people, using us as His instruments.
