SEVEN years after their chance meeting at a massive electrification project in the UK, two ex-Richards Bay ‘powerhouses’ have again joined forces on a London construction site.
Thousands of kilometres from home, Lodewyk de Clercq and Hok van den Berg bumped into each other when putting together the Tilbury Substation in 2009.
They are now enjoying another high voltage coming together at the Wimbledon 400kV GIS Substation site.
Both men, who were extremely active in community affairs and the Bay’s social scene, worked for Alusaf in the 1980s.
Hok then moved to Richards Bay Minerals before taking over Elkon Electrical.
He eventually joined forces with New Adventure (John Woods) to form Dune Electrical Services and is now in the UK as Grosvenor Power Services site manager.
Lodewyk started at Alusaf, moved to the Cape and then came back to the Bay via Gauteng.
He was best known for his role with Hawkswood, Bonfa, De Clercq and Associates.
He is now Project Leader – Power Sector with Laing O’Rourke Infrastructure.
