Boy (11) drowns near water works

It is believed the boy and his friends had been playing along the river bank when he fell in.

EMERGECNY services on Thursday afternoon recovered the body of a drowned 11-year-old boy in the uMhlathuze River near the uMhlathuze Water Works in Ngwelezane.

It took the combined efforts of Empangeni Search and Rescue, Sea Borderline Divepoint, Empangeni Fire Department and IPSS Medical rescue who rigged up a rope system bring the child’s body out of the water.

It is believed the boy and his friends had been playing along the river bank when he fell in.

Police divers found him underwater near the pump station.

The boy is the seventh known drowning victim so far this month.
