Comfort for injured rhinos
Poachers are moving south into both private and State-run reserves with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi bearing the brunt
THE Hluhluwe Hilltop Honorary Officers (HOs) assisted with the delivery of four specially designed extra heavy duty mattresses to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park Game Capture Unit.
The mattresses, produced by Craig De Villiers of MJ Beds, will be used when relocating young orphaned rhino as well as when treating rhino in the field.
In these cases the mattresses will elevate wounds off the ground while they are being cleaned or treated.
With the Kruger National Park stepping up its efforts in anti-poaching activity, poachers are moving south into both private and State-run reserves with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi bearing the brunt.
While most people assume anti-poaching consists of helicopters and rangers with guns, much more goes on behind the scenes that is not in the public eye.
Honorary Officer Bryan Boshoff says: ‘As Hluhluwe Hilltop HOs we urge the public to come forward and assist us in any way. No matter how big or small they think there contribution may be, it all helps immensely.
‘At present the guys in the park are desperately short of medical supplies, both medicines and hardware.
‘They are also appealing to anyone who can assist with feed (hay bales) for the rhino orphans and well as tanks to store water during the ongoing drought.
‘They have excellent catchment areas off the massive roofs covering the bomas.’
