Slow start to turtle nesting season
Early nesting arrivals of turtles to be monitored
THE first week of the 2013/2014 turtle nesting season was quiet, with only a handful of turtles coming ashore to nest.
In the 60km of monitored shoreline in Maputoland, seven loggerheads and four leatherbacks were recorded.
This year a number of turtles have already been recorded nesting as early as July, but the numbers did not appear to increase.
This emerging trend of ‘early nesters’ is very important to monitor in future seasons and may assist in gaining insight into issues such as how climate change is affecting the nesting behaviour of sea turtles.
