A STRONG message which condemns the killing of people with albinism was spread in an edutainment event at Imbizo Hall in Empangeni last Saturday.
The Jikeleza Maz Tour included a theatre play about albinism, a workshop by medical and traditional healers as well as performances by SA’s top musicians.
This campaign was headed by herbalist Dr Musa Zulu with the purpose of curbing the escalating crime against humankind.
The aim was to slam myths associated with albinism and give communities information about its causes.
‘It’s not our practice or our culture. People must not hide behind culture and religion to continue with their evil ways.
‘These are murders and have nothing to do with culture or religion,’ Zulu explained.
Traditional healers, medical doctors and hundreds of people with albinism flocked in to support the campaign under the slogan ’we are also people’.

Dr Nhlakanipho Mkhize from Ngwelezana Regional Hospital gave his medical views on albinism, the source and how those living with it are similar to all other persons.
The campaign was supported by the SABC Foundation and other structures who united to fight for a good cause.
In South Africa, about one in 4 000 people is estimated to be born with albinism.
It is an inherited genetic condition in which the body does not produce enough melanin – the chemical responsible for eye, skin and hair colour.
Because of the lack of pigmentation, the affected people have very pale skin, hair and eyes.
