St Lucia beach drownings scare
The municipality will only provide lifeguards at the St Lucia beach from 15 December

THREE incidents of beach drownings were reported at St Lucia’s Main and Jabula beaches over the period 3-6 December.
Search and Rescue personnel stationed at St Lucia confirmed one body has been found, and they are still searching for the other two.
‘The police helicopter has travelled as far as Sodwana Bay, but nothing has been sighted on the stretch of this shore,’ said Mtubatuba Municipality spokesperson Mduduzi Mahlinza.
The Mtubatuba SAPS is warning bathers both of these beaches currently have no life guards, so swimming there could be risky at times; especially during high tides.
Mahlinza further said the municipality will only provide lifeguards at the St Lucia beach from 15 December.
Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has issued a warning to beachgoers against drinking and swimming this festive season and beyond.
The MEC said she was alarmed at the high number of drownings during the festive season, saying her department will embark on a number of programmes to encourage responsible use of beaches and swimming pools from the south to the north of the province.
