Mtunzini magistrates lay down the gavel

Local magistrates bid farewell

AFTER a lifetime in the judiciary, two Mtunzini magistrates retired at the end of November.

Magistrates Jack Pretorius and Steve de Lange were guests at a farewell function held at the Tradewinds Hotel in Mtunzini on Friday last week.

In the various addresses delivered during the event, colleagues praised them for their loyalty and dedication to the profession.

Pretorius started his career as the Benoni clerk of court in the early 1970s.

He worked his way up through the judiciary ranks as prosecutor, control officer and finally as magistrate.

His first magistrate’s post was in Benoni, but Pretorius also presided over cases in Dannhauser, Parys, Stanger, Koppies and finally Mtunzini.

De Lange returned to the town of his birth, Mtunzini, as magistrate in 1996, after having served as magistrate in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court for six years.

He started his career in 1982 with the Receiver of Revenue in Bloemfontein and was transferred to the Bloemfontein deeds office two years later.

He yearned to return to Zululand and applied for a prosecutor’s post in eShowe.

He arrived in eShowe in 1987 and a year later was appointed as a prosecutor in Mtunzini, a post he held until he was promoted to magistrate in the Emmpangeni Court in 1990.

Both retiring magistrates thanked their families and all the staff with whom they have worked throughout their careers for their guidance as they travelled the difficult path as magistrates.
