Gender based violence publicly opposed
'It is awful that we as women are afraid to step out into our own yards just to hang up our washing for fear of being attacked and raped'
AS part of 16 Days of Activism that is being observed across the country, a band of hardy Empangeni women (and guys) came together on Thursday at the Five Ways Mall intersection to publicly oppose violence against women and children.
‘It is awful that we as women are afraid to step out into our own yards just to hang up our washing for fear of being attacked and raped by ruthless criminals,’ said Empangeni Neighbourhood Watch founder, Kathleen Wiborg.
She posted a message on social media, asking for people to join her in taking a stand.
‘Not to mention all other kinds of abuse we put up with, be it emotional, verbal or physical. Men, these are your wives and children and your support will also be appreciated.
‘We are going to turn our town around, one step at a time but this can only be done as a united front,’ the message continued.
Together with a team of ladies from Alpha Alert and Security as well as the Democratic Alliance’s DAWN initiative, the group gathered at the intersection to hand out flyers and spread the message: No more violence!

DAWN needs assistance to make up rape packs which will be donated to local crisis units to bring a little dignity to victims in their time of need.
