ENFORCING a zero tolerance stance against crime in Brackenham, the Sub Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Ray Govender says there is no place for drug dealers, illegal shebeens and criminal activities in the suburb.
The new representative at the helm, said CPF members were ready to get into gear and address the community’s crime related challenges.
As a facilitator between the police and community, Govender said the CPF’s role was not to overpower the police but to work together them to curb crime and rid the community of illegal activities.
‘We are concerned by the number of drug dealers and illegal shebeens in operation and want action to be taken to have them shut down.
Alcohol and drug abuse is a major problem among the youth and we appeal to the taverns and shops not to sell alcohol or cigarettes to minors as it is against the law.
‘Parents should also be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of substance abuse and seek help to remedy the situation,’ he said.
Other issues under the spotlight are pupils playing truant, reckless driving in the suburb and lack of respect for road rules.
As there are a number of greenbelts surround the suburb, Govender advised residents to be on the lookout for suspicions activities.
‘Houses near the greenbelts are often targeted in house robberies or burglaries and we want residents to be alert and take all measures to keep their properties secured at all times.
‘Incidents where gates have been completely removed from properties is also a threat and residents should be aware of this modus operandi.
‘Reports of youngsters driving without licenses in the suburb have surfaced and we appeal to parents to refrain from allowing youngsters to drive their vehicles.
‘There are incidents where youngsters drive to school and even carry passengers and this is against the law,’ he said.
Meanwhile, an increase in visible policing and increased patrols have been welcomed by the community.
