High praise for volunteers
‘This programme has been in existence for more than 10 years and has yielded positive results'

IT is encouraging to see community members dedicating their time and energy to improving the lives of others without expecting any remuneration.
It is this kind of attitude needed in communities to move South Africa forward.
This was the view of Siyabonga Mbanjwa, from the Office of Operation Sukuma Sakhe under the City of uMhlathuze, addressing a community meeting in Ngwelezana last week where a new committee for the ward 27 war room was elected.
Mbanjwa heaped praise on community care givers for the sterling job they do in visiting different households to check and assess the welfare of citizens.
‘On behalf of the municipality and government, we wish to assure you that we value your hard work, despite the fact that you are not being paid.
Explaining the concept of a war room, Mbanjwa said this was the brainchild of the KZN Premier’s office to help address social ills and eradicate poverty through the involvement of stakeholders such as the Amakhosi, community care givers, community development workers, ward committee members, volunteer community mobilisers and other government departments.
‘This programme has been in existence for more than 10 years and has yielded positive results. It is fully functional throughout the province and we are hoping it will soon be rolled out by the national government.
‘One of the objectives of this programme is to provide support to ward councillors to deliver basic services to communities.
‘This forum we are electing today will meet every two weeks,’ he said.
Ward committee member Arthur Mtshali was elected as the Chairperson of the ward 27 war room.
The other elected members were Thokozile Buthelezi (Deputy Chairperson), Andile Mathaba (Secretary), Nomthandazo Gumede (Deputy Secretary) and Amanda Mbuyazi (additional member).
