Pongola’s litter problem ultimatum
'Pongola’s economy is dependent on the agricultural and tourism industries'
IN response to various complaints that residents of Pongola are dumping their refuse on the outskirts of the town, the AfriForum branch in Pongola was compelled to urge the uPhongolo Local Municipality to address the town’s refuse problem and clean up the refuse.
In accordance with Section 16(1) of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008), it is the responsibility of the local municipality to take reasonable steps to manage waste correctly and to act against members that contravene this Act.
‘Pongola’s economy is dependent on the agricultural and tourism industries and illegal refuse dumping creates a poor impression of this town,’ says Chris Wallace, AfriForum’s Pongola branch chairman.
‘Should the authorities not pay attention to our request, we will consider appointing a contractor and holding the Municipality accountable for the expenses relating to this refuse removal,’ says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Northern KZN.
