Port celebrates 40th anniversary with career exhibition
They will be exposed to the various career paths, training opportunities and bursaries available to them

THE Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) celebrated the Port of Richards Bay’s 40th anniversary by boosting local youth skills development.
In partnership with the King Cetshwayo District, local industries and the Department of Education, TNPA hosted a maritime and engineering careers exhibition week at the harbour from Tuesday until today (Thursday).
The initiative showcased exciting career opportunities within the engineering and maritime industries and promoted science, technology, engineering and mathematics as the key subjects in unlocking professions in these key sectors.
More than 1 000 Grade 10 learners from all five municipalities within the district visited the port .
‘On Thursday, we expect to host around 600 youth who are out of school,’ said Richards Bay Port Manager, Preston Khomo.
‘They will be exposed to the various career paths, training opportunities and bursaries available to them, with specific emphasis on opportunities for both men and women.
‘TNPA has the highest number of female marine employees in the world at the levels of deputy harbour master, marine operations manager, tug master and pilot, and the organisation is actively promoting gender empowerment.
‘This is an opportunity for young learners, boys and girls, to gain valuable information at a very critical moment in their schooling careers.’
