Great blues by the Doc

Meet the blues vagabond, a traveller writing from the dark side of the highway

CANADIAN blues singer, Doc Maclean got what he enjoys most when an evening downpour pounded on the tin roof of The House in Zululand in eShowe on Thursday night.

Appearing most often as a solo performer, Doc says he ‘tells songs and sings stories’.

Over the years his storytelling has become a popular part of his show. Forty-five years ago Doc was playing Charlie Patton songs in Son House’s living room.

Today he is a blues vagabond, a traveller writing from the dark side of the highway.

His finger-style slide guitar pays sonic homage to Patton, House and Big Joe Williams.

His songs are of a celebration of a life lived fast and large on the Blues Highway.

He says, ‘These African venues are as wild as the country they are cut from. The wine is good, people unique and the shows have been wonderful.’

With another 30 venues still waiting, Doc’s next gig will be The Sugar Baron in Rocky Bay before travelling to Amapondo Lodge in Port St Johns, Raggie’s in East London and The Goat Shed in Kenton-on-Sea.
