Speed up of lightning rod roll-out

'We urge communities to invest in lightning rods for their personal protection'

THE KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the roll-out of lightning conductors continues in lightning prone areas.

Four lives have been lost over the past two weeks as a result of lightning strikes in Zululand.

Most recently, two siblings at the Gina household – Snethemba (19) and Thembelani (12) – died in the Ezimbabaleni area near Nongoma.

A delegation from the provincial government, led by MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, visited the family on Monday.

Mbhekeleni Gina (53), the father of the deceased siblings said the incident took place on Saturday while the family were gathered in their rondavel when heavy rains hit the area.

The grieving family has subsequently received groceries from the provincial government and social workers were dispatched to assist with counselling.

Dube-Ncube has also urged communities to purchase conductors at their local hardware shops.

‘Lightning rods have been installed at the Gina household and the surrounding households.

‘Our roll-out is limited in scope to public areas and to special cases, but we urge communities to invest in these rods for their personal protection,’ said Dube-Ncube.
