Port Durnford football league launched

'Many of the players in this area have nowhere to go and end up drowning their frustrations in alcohol, drugs and crime'

PORT Durnford and surrounding areas’ football hopefuls have been given a lifeline to showcase their talents – all thanks to local businessman Bheki Gumede.

After noticing how difficult it was for the soccer players in wards 18, 19 and 22 to get a break into the football league in nearby eSikhaleni, Gumede took it upon himself to ensure they also get the opportunity to have their skills noticed by big soccer leagues in the province.

‘Many of the players in this area have nowhere to go and end up drowning their frustrations in alcohol, drugs and crime.

‘After thinking long and hard about this situation, I decided to start a soccer league which will give them a purpose and allow them the chance of reaching the higher echelons of the game,’ Gumede said.

Twenty local football clubs will battle it out in the new league from the beginning of next year, giving them a chance to proceed to the Castle League at the end of the season.

‘I have put down a prize of R10 000 for the league winners, which I hope will encourage them to do their best during the season,’ Gumede said.

Local Football Association (LFA) and City of uMhlathuze SAFA General Secretary Abel Mdluli promised to support the new league.

‘We will provide them with training to run the league, and also provide referees and other essential services,’ Mdluli said.
