Guard stops robber in his tracks

'Never confront suspects or attempt to capture them because they may be armed and dangerous'

A PRIVATE security officer from Empangeni has been praised for his quick and brave response to a panic alarm, which led to the arrest of a suspected thief.

The ADT Security Monitoring Centre received an alarm activation from a Badenhorst Street home on Sunday and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO) Christopher Bila, who arrived at the property within minutes.

While conducting a perimeter check, Bila found a suspect hiding in the garden with a hosepipe in his possession.
The alleged thief was apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the Richards Bay SAPS.

ADT District Manager Ivan Govender praised Bila for his swift response and bravery.

‘I am proud of the officer’s quick response which ensured that the criminal has now been placed behind bars.’

Govender advised residents to regularly test their alarm systems and to ensure that windows and doors, including garage doors, are properly closed an secured.

‘As an extra security measure, consider installing outdoor beams. If you already have them, ensure that they are also activated.

Should you come across a suspect on your property, remain calm and immediately contact your security service provider or the SAPS.

‘Never confront suspects or attempt to capture them because they may be armed and dangerous,’ Govender said.
