Call for municipal workers’ protection

Irate community members have reportedly committed countless acts of abuse against officials carrying out their municipal functions

MUNICIPAL workers suffer abuse and need to be protected.

To this effect, KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor Dolly Govender, acting on behalf of the council, handed over a memorandum to the SAPS on Friday at the Ballito Lifestyle intersection.

This was the latest offensive in reaction to irate community members who have reportedly committed countless acts of abuse against officials carrying out their municipal functions.

At the same event Cllr Govender launched the 16 Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children.

‘The memorandum outlines the council’s responsibility to improve the conditions of our employees in the workplace and protect those who we appoint to provide services to the public.

‘Human dignity is what we stand for. We uphold and respect the constitution and we will defend it at all costs, said Govender.

Municipal employees, through this demonstration, are not being encouraged to abuse their positions as public servants but to further enhance public offices by following the government principles of Batho Pele.

‘We are joined here by various stakeholders, including organised labour, SAMWU and IMATU who have expressed solidarity with us in condemning aggressive behaviour inflicted against those who are employed by council.’

‘Some members of the community are making it very difficult for our employees to deliver services, and this needs to change.

‘We have observed that most of these incidences are closely connected to human indignity, disrespect and the violation of the Constitutional Bill of Rights.

‘We are calling on the SAPS to take the necessary steps against those who have abused state employees through emotional intimidation and we will in future rally against those who appear before court for harsh judgments.’
