POLICE anti-crime weapons raids last Wednesday were rewarded with the recovery of three unlicensed firearms and a significant amount of ammunition.
Shortly after midnight, members of uThungulu District Crime Intelligence, Empangeni Sub Office together with members from the Rapid Rail Police Unit – Cross border KZN conducted an intelligence led operation at Shisuthi in the Nongoma policing area, following information received.
During the action a suspect named by the SAPS as Vukani Laurance Sikhonde was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
These were a .38 special revolver with scratched serial number and 18 live rounds of ammunition, and a 9mm Norinco star pistol, also with serial number scratched, plus 27 live rounds.

According to police the suspect, a taxi owner of the Nongoma Taxi Association, was interviewed and there were no prior cases pending against him.
Earlier that same night, members of uThungulu District Crime Intelligence and Empangeni Sub Office together with support from the Ulundi Tactical Response Team conducted a similar operation in the same area at Nongoma.
During the operation a German-made Schmeisser automatic submachine gun without ammunition was recovered at the homestead of Mhlakaza Mbatha, but no one was found on the premises.
The firearm was booked at Nongoma Police Station and an enquiry will be opened for investigation.
No arrest has been made at this stage.
