Humble crafter going places
Empangeni beader crosses borders to wow SA neighbours
LINDIKOSI Masinga is a softly spoken, humble yet inspirational character.
This talented master crafter and designer of traditional and contemporary African jewellery is making a name for himself locally and further afield through the Zikulise Community Upliftment Project NPC’s skills training programme in Empangeni.
He was given the privileged opportunity of participating in the East 3 Route Investment Seminar and Exhibition which was held in Swaziland on 16 October .
This initiative was established specifically for cross-border development that would encourage economic growth and job creation for Swaziland, Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal.
The event was funded by Trade & Investment Kwa-Zulu Natal (TIKZN).
The theme for 2013 was Fashion, Food and Tourism and Linda was selected out of several candidates from KZN.
Armed with mentorship from Zikulise and the support of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he was ready to take his designs across the borders.
Linda’s passion for craft began when he was selected to attend a 6-month course in 2005 at Zikulise after which he continued to perfect his beading skill.
His talent and ability was recognised and in 2008 he was appointed their trainer for the traditional Zulu bead weaving courses.
He explains that he enjoys helping others learn how to bead as it is a craft that needs be passed on from generation to generation.
His grandmother passed the skill on to him and he is paying it forward.
Julie Jonson, Executive Director of Zikulise said, ‘Linda has grown so much since we first met. He has an extra-ordinary talent and is a fine craftsman.
‘In my view he may well be the best traditional beader in the country!
‘His designs are unique and the quality of his work is exceptional.’
Commenting on the Swaziland exhibition, Linda said, ‘It was an experience of a life time. I learnt so much and met so many interesting people.
‘There I was with my very small business, Constance Art, Crafts and Designers from a small place, eSikhaleni, interacting with big companies and investors!
‘I couldn’t believe the interest shown in my designs and the encouragement received from the participants.
‘I feel confident that I am on the right track and am so excited about what the future may hold.
‘You never know – international markets here I come!’
