Unizulu hosts US university delegation
'There is growing interest and scope for collaboration with ASU'
THE University of Zululand last week played host to a delegation from the Appalachian State University (ASU) in North Carolina, USA, as part of an ongoing collaboration project.
The visitors, ASU provost and executive vice chancellor Dr Darrell Kruger and associate vice chancellor for international education and development, Dr Jesse Lutabingwa, met with Unizulu executives to finalise talks surrounding a shortlist of priority projects.
These projects include capacity building, an academic exchange programme, an intercultural exchange programme, joint research projects as well as curriculum development and publishing.
‘As part of Unizulu’s drive to broaden its reach and strengthen its academic and research focus, the university established partnerships with universities across continents, thus globally connecting with experts in various fields,’ said Unizulu director of communications Gcina Nhleko.
‘These initiatives are aimed at increasing research capacity, sport and recreation, academic exchanges, scholarly visits and developing new projects that are of benefit to the university community.
‘There is growing interest and scope for collaboration with ASU,’ she said.
‘The proposal outlined some of the areas of possible collaboration. The concept paper was initiated by Unizulu and vice chancellor Professor Xoliswa Mtose, who presented it to ASU when she visited there in September.’
The Appalachian State delegates met with four faculty deans at Unizulu, visited the Richards Bay campus and the Matshengula Primary School in KwaDlangezwa to view the school and conduct conversations with the principal.
‘The aim is to bring final year students to the school as part of the teaching practice practicals,’ Nhleko said.
‘The principal welcomed the idea with enthusiasm and we anticipate sustained and mutually beneficial relationships and footprint through this initiative with the international university,’ she concluded.
