IN Empangeni, the local Rotary Club observed World Polio Day last week by inviting polio survivor, Dawn Angell-Schau, to speak to members about the disease and how it affected her.
The St Catherine’s Earlyact Club observed World Polio Day by making a donation to the End Polio Now programme.
They are also asking that the community save the date, Saturday 25 February 2017, for the annual Rotary Global Swimarathon to be held at St Catherine’s in aid of this programme.
Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative over 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9%, from about 350 000 cases a year to 26 confirmed as of 19 September 2016.
To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, experts say $1.5-billion is urgently needed.
Without full funding and political commitment, this paralysing disease could return to current polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk
