COMMUNITY worker, Sharon Mdletshe is often notified first when there is a snake in the grass somewhere, so when a deadly visitor made a house call, the reptile was quickly escort ed out before it could leave its calling card.
The feisty Mdletshe says the presence of the monstrous Forest Cobra was revealed when her dog suddenly retreated in fear of an unknown disturbance.
‘My daughter was sitting on the floor reading a newspaper, when our dog that was laying near the door, suddenly got up and kept moving backwards.’
With the dog in speedy retreat, the snake sailed into the house.
‘I am not scared on snakes, I can even hold live ones, but with this one, I needed help.
‘It was just so quick and huge.’
Muscle arrived in the form of Riaan (surname unknown) and Lindani Mthiyane and the serpent was cornered and caught.
Mdletshe says it was the third snake she’d seen in two weeks, but the other two were brownish in colour.
The snake has a reputation for being highly aggressive, can strike at long range and may ‘rapid fire’ to ensure maximum damage.
The venom is neurotoxic and deadly.
