SA Civil Aviation calls on airlines to ban Samsung Note 7 devices
South African airlines join international counterparts in banning 'exploding' Samsung Note 7
THE South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has issued a call to all South African airlines to ensure that no passengers or crew carry the faulty Samsung Note 7 devices.
A message sent to Kulula customers on Tuesday morning confirmed that the devices have been banned on all flights and a quick call to the Kulula call centre confirmed the message is legitimate.

South African Airways has already issued a similar ban.
The device has caused global chaos after reports surfaced of hundreds of the phones ‘exploding’ because of a battery fault.
A class action law suit has been filed against the smartphone manufacturing giant, with more than 300 complainants seeking damages amounting to roughly $400 (approx. R5 500).
‘SACAA recommends that airlines and other operators ensure that passengers and crew do not carry the device on board, whether on their person or as check-in luggage or carry on luggage,’ SACAA spokesman Kabelo Ledwaba said.
‘Air operators are also required to comply with regulations on the transportation of dangerous goods, which stipulate that lithium batteries identified by the manufacturer as being defective or for safety reasons, or that have been damaged…are forbidden to be transported by air,’ Ledwaba concluded.
In the United States, airlines have warned that passengers caught attempting to transport a Note 7 device in their luggage would be liable for criminal prosecution.
