THE 2016 winners of the Astronomy Quiz competition, held under the auspices of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement and the National Research Foundation, is Pongola’s Ncotshane Primary School.
The school finished first in the first round held at circuit level.
The team then went on to win the second round in Vryheid and the third and fourth rounds in Richards Bay, where they won the Zululand district and KZN finals.
On Wednesday, 5 October, the team of four pupils – Nonhlanhla Gama, Ziyanda Msibi, Nosipho Nhleko and Nokwanda Nxumalo – accompanied by their teacher MC Buthelezi flew to Johannesburg to compete in the national finals.
The team again proved their prowess and finished first, making Ncotshane Primary the best school in astronomy in South Africa.
Buthelezi was the master mind behind their success, having entered a team in 2014.
The schools reached the provincial final in 2015 and finished second in the national finals.
