MEC launches probe into police brutality
Community members allege there are ongoing killings and harassment by the police

A TEAM of security experts assembled by Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda embarked on a probe last weekend to investigate complaints of police brutality by the eSiyembeni community near Mtubatuba.
Led by security experts and peace facilitators, the group was introduced to the community.
The independent team of experts, working closely with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), was well received by the community, who vowed to put an end to poor relationship with the police.
Community members allege there are ongoing killings and harassment by the police.
It is reported three people have died in the area, allegedly at the hands of people posing as police officers.
According to reports received, this is believed to be linked to taxi violence in the area, and some police are suspected to be colluding with taxi operators to fuel the conflict.
eSiyembeni headman Mphostol Gumede said this matter should be resolved soon now that the process has begun.
‘We want our people to use this forum to voice their complaints so they would be resolved. We are grateful to the government for this initiative,’ Gumede said.
